Avoid These Pitfalls When Selecting Your Next Digital Marketing Agency

If you’ve never been burned by an agency, you’re lucky. Any company can call itself a digital marketing agency, so it makes sense to research how to choose an agency that will do a good job for you. Here’s how you can avoid getting burned.

 

  1. No Long-Term Agreements!
    A successful agency won’t need to lock you into a contract for a year or longer. A successful agency knows that you need to control the length of your association. They also know that the way to retain you as a long-term client is to produce results. If the agency is good at what they do, they’ll use their results to keep you coming back, not a long-term contract.
  2. Don’t Assume That an Agency Will Use Leading-Edge Technology
    Find out what type of technology the agency uses and how experienced they are at using it. Find out if they’re a partner with software publishers, and at what level. For example, a Platinum Agency Partner with HubSpot will be much more experienced than an agency that has recently been approved as a HubSpot partner.
  3. Don’t Assume that Digital Marketing is All Smoke and Mirrors
    Don’t believe anyone who tells you that there’s no way to measure SEO activities, or that social media management is important but difficult to quantify. Work with a digital agency that is good at preparing reports that you can understand, and defining metrics that are important to your operation. Your agency should be happy to see your data, and to discuss the analytics that show how your marketing performance is improving.
  4. Don’t Settle for Arms-Length Support
    If an agency’s management talks to you during the sales process and then disappears, you can be certain that you won’t get the strategic support you need. For strategy development, make sure that you’ll have ongoing relationships with management and those people who have the necessary skills to guide your strategy, not just complete your tactics.
  5. If It Sounds Too Good to Be True. . .
    If someone tells you that they’ll put your website on the first page of Google results for critical keywords immediately after you sign on the dotted line, don’t believe it. Many digital marketing strategies need time to take effect, SEO being one of them. Work with an agency that is realistic about the timeline and when you’ll start seeing results.
